KUCHING: The Ministry of Health (MoH) has allocated 14,000 doses of influenza vaccine for Sarawak, targeting the elderly population across seven locations in the state.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian revealed that 5,600 doses have been distributed in the first phase, with 4,400 already administered to senior citizens.
“While 14,000 doses are not enough for Sarawak’s estimated 300,000 elderly population, this is a voluntary programme,” he said.
He stressed the need to gauge public response before considering additional supplies. “One moment, the vaccine runs out quickly, and the next, there’s no demand. We must avoid wastage.”
Dr Sim made these remarks after launching the state-level National Influenza Immunisation Programme for the elderly at Batu Kawa Health Clinic on Friday (Mar 7).
He urged those interested to register via the MySejahtera app, noting that the vaccine is free and available throughout the year.
Dr Sim also said he would discuss vaccine stock supply with MoH and Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
“The influenza vaccine helps reduce the severity of infections, particularly for those with chronic illnesses.
“Even if they contract the flu after vaccination, symptoms are usually milder. We want to prevent hospitals from being overwhelmed with flu patients,” he added.
He also stressed the importance of maintaining good hygiene post-Covid-19, such as wearing masks when unwell and regular handwashing, as preventive measures against various viruses.
