KUCHING: All schools and district education offices are reminded to be on full alert during the easterly monsoon season.
State Education Department director Dr Azhar Ahmad said this when contacted by New Sarawak Tribune recently on the education department’s progress with the monsoon season.
He stated, “So far, two schools were affected by the flood on Oct 24 — one in Limbang and the other in Bintulu.
“We have reminded all the education offices and schools to be on alert based on the standard operating procedures (SOPs) released in October last year.”
Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) said that the monsoon transition phase, which brings heavy rain and thunderstorms, have been predicted for the whole country this week.
The transition period is expected to not cause heavy floods. However, flash floods could potentially occur in areas which do not have good drainage systems.
On Oct 24, school session at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) RC Kubong, Limbang was cancelled due to a flood that occurred at 8am and had stranded 142 students, 11 teachers and three staff.
On that same day, 171 students from SK Kampung Nyalau, Bintulu were evacuated from their school due to the flood.
