MIRI: Floodwaters continued to disrupt daily life across parts of Miri on Saturday, leaving residential roads impassable, cutting access to industrial areas and forcing more than 150 people to remain in evacuation centres as monsoon rain showed no sign of letting up.

Ground patrols by the Fire and Rescue Department in Zone 6 Sarawak found that flood levels of around one foot remained largely unchanged in several hotspots across Senadin and Tudan, following persistent rainfall linked to the Northeast Monsoon.

Flood monitoring at Jalan Jati 2B in Senadin.

In parts of Jalan Jati, Senadin, small vehicles were unable to pass through residential streets earlier in the day, although water levels were reported to be gradually receding. Rain continued throughout the patrol.

Conditions were more precarious in other areas. In Jalan Senadin 2C, most internal roads in housing estates remained submerged, effectively isolating sections of the neighbourhood. Water levels there were static, with light rain continuing.

At Kampung Tudan Desaras, village roads were still accessible, but several houses in low-lying areas remained flooded, highlighting the uneven impact of the prolonged rainfall.

The most serious disruption was recorded in the Senadin Light Industries area, where floodwaters exceeding one foot rendered the main access road impassable to small vehicles, raising concerns over logistics and business continuity should rain persist.

By Saturday morning, two temporary evacuation centres in Tudan were still operating, sheltering a total of 153 evacuees from 38 families.

The Masjid Darul Iman centre in Tudan 2 was housing 69 people, including elderly residents, children and an infant, while the Dewan Komuniti Tudan Phase 5 centre was accommodating 84 people, among them senior citizens and persons with disabilities.

Fire and rescue officials said flood conditions across the affected areas remained largely static but manageable, adding that continuous monitoring would be carried out as weather conditions remained unfavourable.

With rain still falling across parts of Miri, authorities warned that the situation could change quickly and urged residents in flood-prone areas to stay alert and follow official instructions.
