KUCHING: Fishermen affected by the Northeast Monsoon are eligible to receive up to RM10,000 in assistance from the Fishermen’s Natural Disaster and Welfare Fund.

Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM) Chairman, Muhammad Faiz Fadzil, said the amount of aid depends on the extent of the damage assessed.

“At the moment, we are still evaluating the affected fishermen, determining who is eligible and the level of damage incurred.

“The total allocation has not been finalised yet, but the maximum assistance for each fisherman is RM10,000,” he said.

He said this after officiating the Majlis Rahmah Mesra Madani Bersama Nelayan PNK Satang Biru event at Esplanade Telaga Air at the Telaga Air Esplanade here today.

He added that the welfare and safety of fishermen will continue to be prioritised to ensure they are not left vulnerable during any disaster.

“Fishermen affected by disasters, whether at sea or on land, in any situation, are eligible for assistance,” he stressed.

Meanwhile, the monsoon continues to increase the risk of heavy rainfall in Sarawak, particularly throughout January, which has been identified as the most challenging period.

According to TVS on January 6, Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia) Sarawak Director, Khairul Najib Ibrahim, said wind convergence has returned to Sarawak this week, raising atmospheric humidity and the potential for rain across most parts of the state.

Additionally, METMalaysia also warned that continuous rainfall is likely over the next week, especially during the late afternoon and early morning, depending on current atmospheric conditions.
