KUCHING: A monsoon surge is expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds to Sarawak from Jan 1 to Jan 5, 2026.

Sarawak Meteorological Department director Khairul Najib Ibrahim said rainfall during the period is forecast to exceed 100 millimetres within 24 hours.

In a report by RTM Sarawak, he said areas expected to be affected include Kuching, Samarahan, Sibu and Mukah.

“For this monsoon surge, we are seeing rainfall totals in the areas mentioned exceeding 100 millimetres per day,” he told RTM when met at his office here today (Dec 30).

Khairul said the weather system is also expected to bring strong winds, which could result in rough seas and pose risks to shipping, small boats and recreational marine activities.

Despite the forecast of heavy rain, he said the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) would continue to monitor the situation and issue additional warnings if necessary.

Residents in western Sarawak are advised to remain vigilant and avoid marine activities throughout the affected period.
