KAPIT: Help keeps on coming for the survivors of last Wednesday’s fire at Melatai, Jalan Selirik as non-governmental organisations and governmental bodies have generously given donations in kind to ease their burden.

A political secretary to the Chief Minister Tapah Ata, who is also chairman of Baleh constituency, visited the fire survivors yesterday.

Accompanying him during the visit were the staff members of Kapit MP Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi and Bukit Goram assemblyman Jefferson Jamit Unyat, Penghulu Sia Shui Poh, Ambrose Abong Bugek, Alexson Nila, Cochran Amos, Edward Manggah and committee members of Baleh PBB.

Tapah told the fire survivors that he came with a message from Nanta that a contractor would be engaged to clear the ground for the construction of their new houses on the same spot.

He explained that the plans of the new houses needed to be done properly with a wider road for better flow of traffic.

He promised that they (Nanta, Jamit and he himself) would do their very best to help them rebuild their houses.

Also during the visit, Tapah presented cash aid amounting to RM3,000 to the four families. PBB Baleh chipped in RM1,000, PBB Pelagus-RM1,000 and Nanta-RM1,000.

“Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi sympathised with your fate. However, he is not here today because of his official duties elsewhere. He has instructed a contractor to clear the site for your new houses, and he asked the owners to plan their houses properly including reserving some space to widen your road,” said Tapah.

Chelsea Heights Sports and Recreation Club at Jalan Selirik has also donated cash to the survivors. Chairman of the club, Edeni Uting, handed over the money directly to the heads of the families.

The Malaysian Red Crescent Society Kapit and Lions Club of Kapit also responded immediately by providing food. They combined their resources to deliver the food items such as rice, noodles, sugar, salt, canned food, beverages, biscuits and condensed milk.

MRCS chairman, Dr Sia Tih Kong, who is also a Lions Club member here handed over the food items to Tuai Rumah Gon Manggom on behalf of the families.

The heads of the families are Dapong Sempurai, Dapong Sempurai, Tuai Rumah Gon Manggom and Andress Bawing respectively.
