KUCHING: Sarawak needs more boutique hotels, particularly within the city, to accommodate the rising influx of tourists.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said that boutique hotel developments, including the renovated Legacy Hill Hotel at Jalan Ban Hock, play a key role in supporting tourism growth, especially in serving delegates and visitors attending conferences and other events.
Based on current figures, he said Sarawak has already achieved approximately RM8 billion in tourism receipts this year and is targeting RM12 billion by December.
“The increase in tourist arrivals indicates growing interest in this city. They not only come to enjoy the natural beauty of Sarawak, but also to appreciate the uniqueness of our culture, made up of various ethnicities and religions living harmoniously as one family,” he said at the launch of the Legacy Hill Hotel here on Wednesday.
Abang Johari also said that tourism is an important sector in Sarawak that is being developed progressively, including promoting Kuching as the main destination.
“With road networks such as the Pan Borneo Highway and the Coastal Highway, it is now easier for people to access rural areas to experience the culture and lifestyle of the local communities,” he said.
Hence, the Sarawak Government will focus on upgrading basic infrastructure such as water and electricity supply to support tourism development and ensure visitor comfort.
“Many tourists come to Kuching and then drive to rural areas, similar to tourism concepts in New Zealand or Australia. The only difference is that Sarawak is not too far and enjoys good weather throughout the year,” he added.
