KUCHING: Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (BERSATU) Sarawak welcomes the Sarawak government’s initiative to review the needs and proposals for the restructuring of electoral constituencies in the state.
BERSATU Sarawak Supreme Council member Jaziri Alkaf Abdillah Suffian said the creation of new state constituencies (DUN) is crucial to ensure more balanced, fair, and effective representation at the state level, especially for rural areas that are experiencing growing populations and development.
“BERSATU Sarawak takes note of the proposal to increase the number of DUN seats in Sarawak, as presented and approved under the Dewan Undangan Negeri (Composition of Membership) Bill 2025, increasing the number of seats from 82 to 99.
“As a party that upholds the interests of the people and democratic principles, BERSATU Sarawak emphasises that any redelineation exercise must cover three key aspects: it must be based on fair principles of representation without manipulation or political bias; it must give priority to the needs of rural populations who still face significant gaps in development and service delivery; and it must involve a comprehensive public engagement process, including input from political parties, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and local communities,” he said in a statement today.
Jaziri stressed that any effort to restructure electoral constituencies must be guided by transparency and real public need — without dividing communities, benefiting political elites, or undermining the true aspirations of the Sarawak people.
He added that BERSATU Sarawak, through its members of parliament, is ready to support this effort in Parliament and to provide input and cooperation with all stakeholders to ensure the addition of new DUN seats is carried out with transparency and integrity for the well-being of the people and the overall progress of Sarawak.
“We believe that a politically inclusive and fair Sarawak can only be achieved if the voices of the people are genuinely represented in the State Legislative Assembly,” he said.
