KUCHING: Flood conditions in Sarawak worsened overnight with five new temporary relief centres (PPS) opened in Siburan, pushing the total number of active PPS statewide to eight as of 6 am today (Jan 9).
The Civil Defence Force (APM) said the newly opened centres are PPS Dewan Taman Duranda Emas, PPS ST Peter Simpok, PPS Dewan Serbaguna Kampung Lintang Baru and PPS SK Tanah Merah, with two of the centres still undergoing data updates.
PPS SK Tanah Merah recorded 30 households involving 95 evacuees, while PPS ST Peter Simpok is sheltering four households with 15 victims.
The opening of multiple new centres indicates a deteriorating flood situation in Siburan, which has now emerged as the most affected area in the latest update.
Statewide, a total of 93 households comprising 319 flood victims have been evacuated to relief centres, with the overall evacuation trend continuing to rise.
Elsewhere, existing PPS in Miri, Bau, Kanowit and Samarahan remained operational with no change in the number of evacuees.
In Miri, PPS Dewan Serbaguna SMK Berkenu continues to house 30 households involving 80 victims, while PPS Dewan Serbaguna Kampung Bijuray Mongag in Bau is sheltering 20 households with 94 victims.
In Kanowit, Balai Raya Kampung Betong remains active with six households and 26 evacuees, and in Samarahan, PPS SK Endap is accommodating three households involving nine victims.
APM said monitoring and relief operations are ongoing as authorities continue to assess the evolving flood situation across affected areas.
