BAU: About 473 hikers have successfully climbed Mount Singai here, yesterday.

The one-day hiking event held at the historic Bidayuh site started at 8am and hikers reached its peak at 11am.

Tasik Biru assemblyman Datuk Henry Harry Jinep was present to flag-off the hike.

He said that the event received an overwhelming response not only from the people of Kuching, but also from Kuala Lumpur.

In spite of the event being held for the first time, it was a successful one.

“The participants also helped to carry bricks and bags of gravels or sand for the construction of the Catholic Memorial and Pilgrimage Centre (CMPC),” he said.

He added a few lucky hikers got the opportunity to enjoy local Singai durian since it was in season.

Meanwhile, Grit Event Management chief executive officer and event director Awang Saifeluddin said the event aimed to promote the local attractions in Bau.

He added people could see the beautiful rainforest and visit the Catholic Church when they climb the 1,000 steps to reach the church.

“There is also a trek where people can hike to the peak of Mt Singai to admire the view of Bau,” he said.

He also said that if one was lucky, they would be able to spot the Corpse Flower as the flower is rare.

“We are planning to make this an annual event. Hopefully we can attract more local and international tourists to this beautiful place.”

Mount Singai is located within the Bau District, which is about a 40-minute drive from Kuching city.
