KUCHING :The opening of borders between Sarawak and West Kalimantan will enhance more tourism opportunities between Malaysia and Indonesia.

Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the relationship between Indonesia and Malaysia, in particular, Sarawak must continue to be strengthened.

He was commenting on the borders that opened earlier of this year, on April 1.

Abdul Karim pointed out that there is a good pace in terms of movement between the two areas and hoped that it would continue to increase, benefitting both Sarawak and West Kalimantan through the exchanges of entertainment, food and tourism.

He was speaking to the media after a reception hosted by the Consul General of the Republic of Indonesia in conjunction with Indonesia’s 77th Independence Day and TNI Commemoration Anniversary here on Monday (Oct 17).

Also present at the press conference was Consul General of the Republic of Indonesia in Kuching, Raden Sigiti Witjaksono, who concurred with Abdul Karim.

“Indonesians in West Kalimantan would come to Sarawak for its medical tourism, but there is more to that and we hope more Indonesians can come over and explore Sarawak.”

Meanwhile, the reception was attended by around 200 people, including Minister for Transport, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin; Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Kuching, Xing Weiping; Consul General of Brunei Darussalam in Kuching, Noni Zurainah Ismi; Kuching South City Council mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng and Kuching North City Hall mayor Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai.
