KOTA SAMARAHAN: The mosque institution must evolve beyond its role as a place of worship to become a vibrant hub for youth development and community unity.
Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development, who is Kota Samarahan MP, Datuk Rubiah Wang, highlighted that mosques serve as essential platforms for fostering moral character and social responsibility among the younger generation.
“Ramadan reminds us that the strength of a community is not measured solely by physical development or economic progress, but also by the strength of its values, moral character and unity,” she said when officiating the Sarawak-level ‘Rakan Masjid X Rakan Muda Ramadan’ Programme 2026 at Masjid Al-Malik, Taman Uni Garden on Friday (Mar 13).
Addressing the challenges of the digital age, she noted that young people are increasingly exposed to misinformation and an over-reliance on social media.
To counter these influences, she urged mosques to provide positive spaces where youths can gather, seek knowledge, and build character grounded in religious values.
“When youths stay close to the mosque, they will be more responsible in society, wiser in using technology, and more mature in making decisions,” she added.
Organised by the Sarawak State Youth and Sports Department, the initiative was held in collaboration with several strategic partners, including the Yayasan Dakwah Islamiah Malaysia (YADIM), the Samarahan Division Islamic Religious Office, and the Samarahan Division Tabung Baitulmal.
The programme also saw participation from the Samarahan District Education Office and various local educational institutions, aimed at enlivening mosque-based activities throughout the state.
Rubiah also expressed hope that similar programmes would continue to be expanded to involve more youths across Sarawak in efforts to enliven mosques and build a harmonious and united community.
Also present were Sarawak Youth and Sports Department’s Director Lamat Nyalau, Samarahan District Officer Ahmad Abdul Razak and Masjid Al-Malik Uni Garden chairman, Abdullah Daraup.
