KUCHING: The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) has pledged to strengthen monitoring and ensure strict compliance with guidelines for all events under its supervision following the recent viral dinner incident.

In a statement, the ministry expressed regret over any confusion or misunderstanding arising from the incident, which may have caused discomfort among the public.

“MOTAC takes this matter as a lesson and will ensure that similar incidents do not recur.

“All programmes under the ministry’s supervision will strictly follow established guidelines and ethics,” it said.

The ministry also extended appreciation and gratitude to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for his advice, constructive feedback and continuous support towards efforts to strengthen the tourism, arts and culture sectors.

“MOTAC deeply regrets any inconvenience caused and will continue to enhance and strengthen its responsibilities to the people and the nation,” the statement added.

Earlier, Anwar had issued a stern warning to Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing and his ministry (MOTAC) that the serving of alcohol at an official government event must never be repeated.

Anwar said the explanation provided by MOTAC, that alcohol was served only after the official programme had concluded, was unacceptable as the government holds a firm policy against serving alcohol at official functions, without exception.

“MOTAC explained that the alcohol was served after the official event ended. But it was still within the same venue and part of the same event.

“We have issued a stern warning to the Minister and the Ministry. This mistake must not be repeated.

“Regardless of the explanation that the programme had concluded, it is still entirely inappropriate,” he said this recently.
