PUTRAJAYA: The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) has launched an investigation into the recent tour bus accident that claimed lives and injured several students from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI).

The tragic incident occurred at around 1:10 am on June 9 at Kilometre 53 of the East-West Highway, Banun, Gerik, Perak.

In a statement yesterday, MOTAC extended its deepest condolences to the families of the victims and expressed its sympathies to all those affected.

The ministry has also visited the victims and their families to offer support.

Following the incident, MOTAC promptly initiated investigations under the Tourism Industry Act 1992 [Act 482].

Inspection notices and show-cause letters have been issued to the business entities involved in operating the ill-fated bus.

MOTAC is working closely with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD), and the Road Transport Department (JPJ) to ensure a thorough investigation in accordance with the law.

The ministry emphasised that appropriate action will be taken against any parties found responsible once investigations are concluded.

“MOTAC remains committed to ensuring that tourism activities in Malaysia are conducted safely, ethically, and for the benefit of future generations,” the statement added.

The ministry also conveyed its hope for the speedy recovery of the injured students.
