PUTRAJAYA: Following reports circulating on social media regarding the cancellation of a flight by an umrah travel operator involving more than 300 pilgrims on Jan 14, the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) conducted an inspection of the company’s premises on the same day for investigation purposes.
As of now, MOTAC has received eight complaints against the umrah travel operator, with total reported losses amounting to RM180,116.00.
“Preliminary investigations found that the umrah travel operator in question had violated the Tourism Industry Act 1992 [Act 482], and MOTAC has taken immediate action by suspending the company’s licence,” MOTAC stated in a media release today (Feb 26).
“During this suspension period, the company has been advised to fulfill all booked and paid travel arrangements and to refrain from engaging in any new transactions, including the advertisement and sale of umrah packages.
“Additionally, the company must immediately refund payments and return any documents belonging to pilgrims who have chosen to cancel their bookings.
“Further investigations under Act 482 are ongoing concerning material changes to the umrah packages offered. Previous records indicate that the company has been fined twice before.
“MOTAC is committed to protecting the interests of the public and ensuring that licensed tourism operators continue to operate with integrity.
“Tourism agencies are reminded to conduct business responsibly and comply with all regulations set by the authorities.
