KUCHING: Tears welled in the eyes of Halipah Si’ee as she stepped onto the stage during the sixth session of the 29th Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) Convocation Ceremony, not for herself, but on behalf of her late daughter, Nur Fateen Syazwani Ahmad Chula.
Her daughter’s dream of graduating was cut short by illness earlier this year, yet her perseverance and spirit continue to inspire those who knew her.
Despite battling a serious illness for more than three years, Nur Fateen remained determined to complete her studies in Social Sciences, majoring in Political Studies and Governance.
According to Halipah, her daughter, the third of seven siblings, was a bright and ambitious young woman who never gave up, even as her health deteriorated.
“She was cheerful and gentle. Even when she was in pain, she continued to study and tried her best to keep up with her coursework,” she recalled.
Nur Fateen was first admitted to the hospital in June 2022 after complaining of severe abdominal pain, which doctors later discovered required surgery.
Despite frequent hospitalisations, she continued to study whenever she could, driven by a strong will to graduate.
Tragically, she passed away in February 2025 at the age of 26.
Her mother revealed that doctors had recommended surgery, but by then, Nur Fateen’s condition had weakened considerably.
“She chose to keep fighting until the end,” said Halipah softly.
When Nur Fateen’s name was called during the convocation ceremony, Halipah and her family were overwhelmed with emotion.
“Although she is no longer with us, her hard work and perseverance are recognised. I accepted the award on her behalf as a symbol of her dedication,” she said.
UNIMAS confirmed that Nur Fateen had completed 116 out of 120 credit hours required for graduation, equivalent to 97 per cent of the total requirement.
“She should have graduated earlier, but her illness forced her to postpone several semesters. Still, she never gave up,” said Halipah.
To those facing similar struggles, Halipah offered a message of strength and hope.
“Let my daughter’s determination be an inspiration. No matter what challenges you face, don’t give up. Keep fighting until the end,” she said.
Nur Fateen’s sister, Nur Shahidatul Afira, 35, shared that her late sibling’s determination continues to inspire the family.
“She showed us what it means to stay strong no matter what happens,” she said.
She also encouraged her younger siblings to continue their studies and strive for success like Nur Fateen did.
“She loved her brothers and sisters deeply and always tried to help with the house chores and cook even when she was unwell.
“I hope they will honour her memory by working hard and never giving up,” she added.
