KOTA SAMARAHAN: A woman died while receiving treatment after the car she was driving plunged into a lake within the Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) campus on Monday morning.

The 50-year-old victim, identified as Nur Shareefah Lusia Abdullah, was rescued from the submerged vehicle by passers-by but was found unconscious.

She was rushed to the UNIMAS Prima Health Centre, where she was pronounced dead at 11:51 am while undergoing treatment.

Meanwhile, her 17-year-old daughter, who has autism, managed to escape the incident unharmed.

Kota Samarahan police chief, Supt Damataries Lautin, said the crash happened at around 10:45 am as the two were believed to be travelling from Desa Ilmu towards SMK Muara Tuang using an internal campus route.

“Preliminary investigations revealed the vehicle is believed to have stopped briefly by the roadside near the lake before suddenly losing control and veering into the water.

“The victim’s body has been sent to the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) Forensic Unit for a post-mortem,” he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
