MIRI: A 53-year-old motorcyclist was killed in a collision with a car on the Pan Borneo Highway in Miri on Tuesday (Mar 17).
Police said the crash happened at about 4:30pm at KM 822.1 near the Suai junction in Batu Niah, within the Miri district.
Miri police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the car, driven by a 36-year-old local man, had been travelling from Miri towards Bintulu when the incident occurred.
Initial investigations suggest the motorcyclist moved from the left side of the road to the right, attempting to make a U-turn across the carriageway.
The car is believed to have struck the motorcycle during the manoeuvre.
The rider was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not been disclosed.
The driver escaped injuries.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of Malaysia’s Road Transport Act 1987, which relates to causing death by dangerous driving.
Police have urged witnesses to come forward as investigations continue.
The incident comes ahead of the Aidilfitri festive period, when traffic volumes are expected to increase sharply.
Authorities have renewed calls for motorists to exercise caution, particularly on high-speed routes such as the Pan Borneo Highway.
