Motorcyclist killed in late night crash near school

MIRI: A motorcyclist in his 30s was killed after a collision with a sports utility vehicle near a religious secondary school here early Monday (Mar 16).

The crash occurred shortly after midnight along Jalan Bakam, near Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama Miri.

The Fire and Rescue Department received an emergency call at about 12.32am on Tuesday, reporting a collision involving a Perodua Aruz and a Yamaha LC motorcycle.

A fire engine and an Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) unit from the Miri Sentral fire station was dispatched to the scene, located about 14 km away.

Firefighters arrived at 12.47am and found that the occupants of the Perodua Aruz had managed to exit the vehicle before emergency crews reached the scene.

The motorcyclist, however, had been thrown from his bike during the collision and was discovered in a roadside drainage ditch near the crash site.

Rescue personnel retrieved the victim from the drain before medical officers from the Ministry of Health examined him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Four police personnel and two health ministry officers were also present during the operation.

Firefighters later handed the body to police for further investigation.

The rescue operation ended shortly after 2am once the area had been secured and the scene deemed safe.

Police are expected to investigate the circumstances leading to the collision.
