KUCHING: Motorcyclists from the B40 households will get five-ringgit worth of free petrol vouchers to help them cope with the increasing costs of living.

The gift, courtesy of Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap, the National Consumer Foundation Malaysia (YPNM), and Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) will be given to 200 underprivileged motorcyclists.

Yap said the free voucher programme is part of an on-going effort by the government to help B40 households cope with the increasing living costs due to inflation.

“The price hike of petrol since February 2021 has affected the livelihoods of many citizens, especially lower income groups.

“As Sarawak is still lacking accessibility to public transport, many of them have to resort to using motorcycles as their main transportation when commuting to work.

“Therefore, we hope that this programme can help ease the burden of living cost, especially of gig workers, allowing them to provide for their families,” he said when launching the free petrol voucher programme at Petronas Green Heights here yesterday.

Yap hoped the programme could set a precedent for other constituencies to follow, benefitting more citizens in the process.

YPNM chairman Daren Ling Hang Hui saaid that the foundation was working closely with the KPDN and local Sarawak assemblymen to protect consumer rights and provide charitable contributions to the needy.

Also present at the launch were KPDN Sarawak director Matthew Dominic Barin, secretary-general Datuk Azman Mohd Yusof, YPNM secretary Jimmy Ling Yee Kung, Petronas Sarawak general manager Zulaihi Mantali, and Petronas Head of Retail Sales Abby Sukardy.
