SIBU: The University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Sarawak Public Works Department (PWD) at its campus here today.

According to its vice chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Khairuddin Abdul Hamid, the MoU aims to strengthen collaboration in human capital development and various related activities, with a focus on fostering mutually beneficial ties between academic and industrial sectors.

“Key areas of cooperation to be explored include academic programmes, staff and student exchanges, as well as joint research and publications,” he said in his speech at the MoU signing ceremony between him and PWD Sarawak director Dr Cassidy Morris.

Meanwhile, Cassidy in his speech said that UTS serves as an ideal platform for PWD to collaborate on research.

“Through this MoU, there are many opportunities we can explore together, as our staff are highly active in innovation.

“In terms of programmes and training, PWD can serve as an excellent training ground. For industrial training, our doors are always open.

“We offer a wide range of training opportunities because many of our projects and management require on-the-job training within our department,” he said.

He also highlighted the importance of UTS tailoring its curriculum to meet industry demands, particularly those of PWD, to ensure that the university’s graduates are better prepared to address the state’s needs.

“If UTS can equip graduates with skills tailored to fields like architecture, civil engineering, or other relevant disciplines within PWD, it will enhance their employability.

“However, this effort also requires initiative from the students themselves,” he added.

Cassidy went on to commend UTS’ efforts in promoting knowledge about the Green Building Index (GBI), which aligns with PWD Sarawak’s goals.

“We hope to learn from UTS and take steps to construct buildings that adhere to GBI standards.

“Although there are challenges, these are opportunities worth exploring, and I believe this collaboration will take us further,” he said.

Also present were Dean of School of Built Environment UTS associate professor surveyor Dr Kan Fock Kui and deputy director (Technical Services) PWD Meehan Jorai.
