SIBU: A task force committee led by Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee, and Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang will be established.
According to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, the task force will be responsible for looking into the construction of a bridge connecting Sibu’s west bank to the town centre.
“Just now, I asked Councillor Kelvin Lau (SUPP Bawang Assan branch chief) how long the bridge would be. He said 400 metres across Sungai Igan.
“Sarawak has already built a 7km bridge for Batang Lupar, so 400 metres is nothing,” he said in his speech when officiating at the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Chinese New Year celebration here, today.
He also urged that a detailed plan be carried out, including exploring economic activities that could be developed in the area, such as rubber or paddy planting.
“Jangan alang-alang. Build a beautiful one. Jangan kalah dengan Jambatan Kemena di Bintulu. You know, in Bintulu, the Kemena Bridge is like San Francisco,” he added.
The proposal for the construction of a bridge has been put forward by Lau who is also the organising chairman in his welcoming speech at the celebration.
“I believe it will boost development, particularly in the Bawang Assan area,” said Lau, who is also SUPP Central Youth chief.
Meanwhile, on the celebration, Lau said this year is the Year of the Snake, and according to tradition, the snake symbolises transformation and renewal.
“If we look at it from the context of Sarawak today, Sarawak is undergoing a transformation — not only becoming stronger but also rising with greater competitiveness within our country. And this renewal is the result of the leadership of none other than our Premier.
“We can also see that GPS leaders, together with the Premier, are constantly fighting for Sarawak’s rights and striving to enhance the development of Sarawak’s economic sectors,” he stressed.
Lau called on the Youth wing to play a significant role alongside GPS party leaders in further strengthening political stability in Sarawak, so that together we can move forward to achieve the development vision leading up to 2030 under the leadership of the Premier.
Also present were Deputy Premier who is also SUPP president Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, Minister for Utilities and Telecommunications Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi, Minister for Transport Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin, Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting, Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee, Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee and the Chief Political Secretary to the Premier Datuk Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman.
