SERIAN: The Ministry of Health (MoH) takes the harmful effects of widespread smoking very seriously.

Epidemiologist from the Serian Health Office Dr. Cherrysca Dante Anthony said this includes unethical marketing and promotional activities targeting teenagers.

“The Smoking Products Control Act for Public Health 2024, Act 852, which was gazetted on Feb 2 came into effect on Oct 1, along with the regulations and orders under it.

“This new Act covers a wide scope, including definitions, registration, advertising, promotion, sponsorship, sales control, price control, packaging, labelling, manufacturing, trade of cigarettes, and the liabilities of manufacturers, importers, and distributors,” she said.

She said this during the launching ceremony of the Integrated Mega Operation for the Smoking Products Control Act for Public Health 2024 (Act 852) at the Serian Division level, held recently.

She also hoped that Act 852 will be enforced more effectively in the future and reduce the negative impact of all smoking products in the community.

Afterwards, health officers from the Serian Health Office were deployed to the location of the Integrated Mega Operation for the Smoking Products Control Act for Public Health 2024 (Act 852) at the Serian Market.

Also present were Serian District Officer representative Dayang Nurhazira Abang Morsidi, Siburan District Officer Ranum Bari, and the representative of the Administrative Officer from the Balai Ringin Sub-District Office, Gary Sean Thomas Tipas.
