KUCHING: The Sarawak government will conduct periodic tenancy reviews of all Program Perumahan Rakyat (PPR) schemes throughout the state to ensure that the assistance benefits those who genuinely need it.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said the measure was introduced following the increasing demand for public housing, particularly among the B40 community and low-income households.
This will be carried out in accordance with established policies and guidelines, taking into account several factors, including the tenancy period, household income, property ownership, payment records, and compliance with stipulated conditions.
“At the same time, the welfare circumstances of residents are also assessed carefully on a case-by-case basis to ensure that any decision made is fair and compassionate,” he said.
His speech was read by Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government (Local Government) Datuk Michael Tiang at the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) Ngiling Bidai 2026 celebration at HDC building this morning.
He said the initiative is not intended to burden any individual or family but reflects the state government’s responsibility to ensure that limited public housing resources are managed fairly, transparently, and prudently.
“The government remains committed to providing affordable housing for those in need through various public housing programmes that not only offer shelter but also create a conducive living environment to improve the socio-economic well-being of the people,” he said.
Among the key initiatives of the PPR scheme provides affordable rental homes to eligible families as a temporary social safety net.
“This programme helps families achieve greater financial stability, improve their quality of life, and eventually move towards home ownership and a more self-reliant future,” he said.
He said the government will continue to safeguard the welfare of the people, particularly the B40 group, while ensuring the long-term sustainability of public housing programmes implemented in the state.
