KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) has received a record 545 entries from 58 media organisations for this year’s MPI PETRONAS Malaysian Journalism Awards 2024 (HKM 2024), marking a 12 per cent increase from last year.
MPI chief executive officer Ainol Amriz Ismail said the number of entries surpassed the previous record of 488 submissions.
“The Best Photojournalism category received the highest number of entries at 80, an 82 per cent increase from last year.
“This was followed by the Best Video News category with 65 entries and the Best Video Show category with 46 entries,” he said in a statement.
He attributed the rise in participation to the competitiveness and high commitment of media practitioners, as well as MPI’s aggressive promotion efforts, including media courtesy visits and the first HKM briefing session.
“MPI is also proud to welcome new media organisations participating in HKM for the first time.
“Therefore, MPI’s goal of attracting participation from all media platforms has been successful,” he said.
Nominations for the Tokoh Wartawan Negara, Tokoh Media, and Special Awards will begin in early March 2025, with letters sent to media organisations, journalist associations, non-governmental organisations, and higher learning institutions.
The nomination deadline is May 9, 2025.
The award ceremony, set for June 20, 2025, on Malaysian Journalist Night in Kuala Lumpur, will see winners take home a total cash prize of RM450,000, sponsored by PETRONAS.
First introduced in 1980, HKM recognises the best journalistic works by local media practitioners.
