KUALA LUMPUR:  The Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) has launched its first-ever e-Journal, a significant move aimed at bridging the gap between the world of media practice and academia.

Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir praised the initiative, calling it a timely and strategic step in the journalism field.

“This e-Journal is a noble effort to empower academic writing among journalists and to promote research in the fields of journalism, media, and communication,” he said.

He said this in his speech at the MPI–Petronas Malaysian Journalism Awards 2024 (HKM 2024) and Malam Wartawan Malaysia 2025 (MWM 2025) celebration at The Majestic Hotel, here last night (June 20).

He added that higher education institutions must play a key role in promoting ethical journalism.

“Universities and colleges must produce journalism graduates who are not only skilled in news writing but also critical thinkers, ethically grounded, and who understand the philosophy behind the journalist’s duty,” said Zambry.

He also urged for closer collaboration between universities and media organisations through joint research, industrial training, and ethics-focused programmes.

“The role of the Ministry of Higher Education, which I lead, is to ensure that communication and journalism curricula remain relevant to current developments, including elements such as AI, data analytics, cyber laws, and professional ethics.

“We aim to produce knowledgeable and principled journalists, for only then can journalism continue to be a noble profession trusted by the public,” he added.

Zambry also commended MPI for its ongoing efforts to elevate journalistic standards in Malaysia, including the annual HKM awards, professional training, and public discourse forums.

He expressed appreciation to sponsors such as PETRONAS, the main sponsor for this year’s awards, for their continued support in upholding media integrity.

He further lauded the Media Integrity Support Signature Campaign held during the event, in which attendees pledged their commitment to uphold ethical journalism.

“MPI has taken a symbolic yet meaningful step in reminding us that ethics is the pillar of journalism. Without it, press freedom risks becoming informational anarchy,” Zambry said.
