CYBERJAYA: The Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) has welcomed the Ministry of Communications’ announcement of a RM30 million Media Innovation Fund for Phase One, scheduled from Jan 1 to 14, 2026.

The initiative is described as a strategic and timely move to accelerate the transformation of the local media industry.

MPI chief executive officer Dr Ainol Amriz Ismail said the initiative reflects the government’s serious commitment to ensuring that the nation’s media ecosystem remains relevant, competitive, and resilient, in line with the challenges of the digital era and rapid technological advancements, particularly in artificial intelligence (AI).

“MPI views the Media Innovation Fund not merely as financial support, but as a catalyst for innovation and the transition of media towards more creative, impactful, and technology-oriented journalism models. It is also aligned with the aspirations of the MADANI Government, which emphasises human capital development, sustainability, and national competitiveness,” he said in a statement.

According to Dr Ainol, the fund’s focus on training media workers, technology adoption, software, equipment, as well as research and development (R&D) of content is in line with the industry’s current needs, especially in facing changes in the media landscape, audience behaviour, and the demand for digital content.

“MPI believes that developing the competencies of journalists and media practitioners through structured training is the key to the success of industry transformation.

“Today’s media must not only be fast, but also factual, ethical, and capable of responsibly leveraging new technologies such as automation, data analytics, and digital platforms,” he explained.

He also described the eligibility requirements set by the fund — including registration with the Department of Information Malaysia (JAPEN) and possession of an active Media Accreditation Card — as important measures to ensure that the disbursement of funds is carried out with integrity and benefits media organisations that are genuinely committed to professionalism.

MPI, he added, is ready to collaborate with the Ministry of Communications and other stakeholders in supporting the implementation of the Media Innovation Fund, particularly through MPI’s role as a professional training institution in strengthening the capacity, skills, and preparedness of media practitioners to face the future of the industry.

“This effort should be viewed as a long-term national investment in the media industry, which plays a strategic role in delivering accurate information, shaping public discourse, and supporting national development within an increasingly complex digital ecosystem,” he said.
