GEORGE TOWN: The Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) has been appointed as the industry adviser to the Faculty of Communication and Media (SOCOM) at Han Chiang University College of Communication (HCUC), following the signing of a Letter of Intent (LoI) between the two parties.

The signing event took place at HCUC’s campus here on Thursday formalising initial commitments towards a strategic collaboration in journalism, media and communications.

The LoI was signed by MPI chief executive officer Ainol Amriz Ismail and HCUC Vice-Chancellor Associate Professor Dr Beh Kok Hooi.

Beh, in his remarks, said the partnership seeks to bridge the gap between academia and the media industry, offering students valuable exposure to real-world media practices.

“This LoI reflects our mutual intent to sign an MoU that will strengthen the relationship between the academic world and the media industry.

“Through this partnership, our students will benefit from direct exposure to professional media practices, while our lecturers and researchers will have opportunities to work alongside media industry leaders,” he said.

He added that the collaboration is expected to enhance the quality of HCUC’s communication programmes and improve the employability of its graduates.

Meanwhile, Ainol described the partnership as a significant step towards nurturing ethical, tech-savvy journalists who are attuned to the evolving digital media landscape.

“This collaboration strengthens the bridge between academia and the media industry, especially in our shared mission to shape future journalists who are not only ethical and skilled but also sensitive to the changing digital ecosystem,” he said.

As part of the collaboration, MPI will provide industry input on curriculum design and development, offer insights into current media trends and practices, and explore joint knowledge-sharing initiatives.

Both parties are in the process of finalising the details of a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), expected to be signed soon.
