KOTA SAMARAHAN: The Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) remains committed to developing a safe, clean and liveable town through firm action against illegal structures and the launch of the 2025 Clean, Attractive and Fragrant Public Toilet (BMW) Competition.

MPKS chairman Abang Ismawi Abang Ali said regular inspections are actively being carried out on unauthorised structures in industrial, commercial and residential areas across Samarahan.

“As of July 25, MPKS has recorded 28 cases of illegal structures – one in an industrial zone, 13 in commercial areas (with two cases resolved), and 14 in residential areas (with one case resolved),” he said at a press conference held at the council’s headquarters here yesterday.

Of the total cases, he said eight have been issued demolition notices, while 17 are still under investigation by MPKS’ special task force.

He also stressed that follow-up action will be conducted in phases, including acting on public complaints.

To cultivate a culture of public cleanliness, Abang Ismawi said MPKS is introducing the 2025 BMW Competition, which will assess public toilets at schools, eateries, houses of worship, petrol stations, shopping malls and hotels.

“This competition will not only evaluate cleanliness and the appeal of public toilets but also aims to raise awareness among business owners on the need for systematic maintenance and compliance with 20 BMW criteria as stipulated in licensing conditions,” he said.

He added that evaluation will take place from the first week of August to early September, with total cash prizes of RM40,200 to be awarded to top-performing premises.

Abang Ismawi also urged all building owners, operators and developers to continue complying with the Sarawak Building Ordinance 1999 and maintain cleanliness for the collective well-being.

“These efforts are in line with our aspiration to transform Kota Samarahan into a smart, clean, safe and prosperous city,” he said.
