KUCHING: From battling simulated blazes to mastering safety protocols, 32 cadets from eight secondary schools across the city took part in the Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC) Stampin Branch Youth Committee’s Safety and Fire Prevention Course 2025.
The one-day course aimed to equip young members with essential fire safety knowledge and life-saving skills as part of their progression under the MRC badge scheme.
Among the participating schools were Sunny Hill Secondary School, SMK Sungai Tapang IB World School, SMK Gapor, SMK Batu Lintang, SMK Padungan, Lodge International School, Chung Hua Middle School No. 1, and SMK Bandar Kuching No. 1.
Conducted under Course Code CFSP1091 and aligned with the MRC Guidebook No.7, the programme also helped prepare cadets for their upcoming Safety and Fire Prevention Badge Examination, encouraging teamwork and bonding among students from diverse backgrounds.
The hands-on training was led by three experienced officers from the Batu Lintang Fire and Rescue Station, Senior Officer Dennis Nuon, Officer Mohd Hadeli Osman, and Officer Karey Kunsil, who provided live demonstrations and practical exercises to reinforce key fire safety practices.
Meanwhile, MRC Stampin Branch vice chairman I, Kenny Kueh, said the training went beyond badge attainment.
“Today’s training is not just about earning a badge, but it is about integrating this knowledge into your daily life and contributing to a safer community,” he said.
He added his team is also looking forward to the continuous collaboration with the Fire and Rescue Department (BOMBA).
Nuon, who represented BOMBA, also commended the initiative.
“We are proud to support programmes like this that empower youth with fire safety knowledge.
“Early exposure to fire prevention practices is crucial in reducing risks and building a more resilient society.
“BOMBA remains committed to working closely with organisations like the MRC to nurture a culture of preparedness and responsibility among the younger generation,” he said.
