SIBU: The government is urged to establish a strong anti-bullying framework, reporting systems, improve psychological counselling resources and enforce a transparent disciplinary mechanism in schools.

Bukit Assek State Assemblyman, Joseph Chieng Jin Ek, pointed out that such measures are vital due to the recent bullying statistics which were alarming.

He disclosed that there were a total 3,887 bullying cases in schools for year 2022- 2023, and by Oct 2024, it had surpassed 6,200 cases.

“These rising numbers represent countless silent victims suffering behind closed doors,” he said at the opening of the Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) Sibu District Level ‘s two-day training camp for student at MRCS Sibu Branch’s premises on Saturday.

Chieng lauded the Red Crescent’s role for going far beyond teaching first aid as it also teaches good values.

“You learn how to save lives, instill empathy and compassion. Bullying can stop when each student dares to say: ‘No. This is not okay!’

“I call upon every young person – do not be a bully, do not stay silent, be the one who stands up for others. Let us make schools a place where dreams grow, not fear for our lives,” he added.

Chieng said the skills students’ learned at the training camp may one day protect a friend, save a stranger, or change the course of someone’s life.

Touching on the training camp, he said its objectives were significant and far-reaching in enhancing disaster management capabilities, strengthening first aid and emergency response skills, building teamwork and unity, and fostering community resilience.

During the event, Chieng also witnessed the official launch of the giant LED screen panel which he sponsored for the MRCS Sibu Branch’s usage.

He hoped this new equipment will boost the effectiveness of emergency training; support fast and clear communication in times of danger; attract more young people to join volunteerism; and amplify the Red Crescent mission to wider audiences.

Meanwhile, MRCS Sibu Branch Vice Chairperson, Dr Rachel Teng Li Cin, said this year’s training camp marked another milestone for the Sibu District Red Crescent, a place where young hearts gather to build skills, strenghen discipline, and grow the humanitarian spirit at the core of the movement.

With its first collaboration with SEGI University, MRCS Sibu hopes to offer fresh perspectives, creativity, and academic strength to enrich the camp.

“We thank SEGi University for joining hands with us in nurturing young humanitarian leaders with both knowledge and compassion.

“From first aid drills to leadership challenges, the programme has been designed to build confidence, teamwork, and empathy.

“We hope all participants leave with new knowledge, stronger values and a renewed sense of purpose,” Dr Teng added.

Among those present was MRCS Sibu Branch Chairman, Penghulu Chua Hiong Kee.
