KUCHING: Mara Junior Science College (MRSM) were the champions of the Kuching Rugby Football Club (KRFC) U16 School 7s Rugby Tournament Dick Bentham Cup, defeating Sakura with a 21-12 scoreline after an entertaining Cup final. Mara Junior Science College
MRSM’s coach, Vincent Nelos, praised his players for displaying tremendous fighting spirit and teamwork throughout the tournament.
“First of all, I would like to congratulate my players for sticking to our game plan.
“The most important thing today was their fighting spirit and how well they gelled as a team,” he told Sarawak Tribune at the Song Kheng Hai Rugby Field here after his team’s victory.
MRSM were fantastic in the group stages, securing a 19-5 victory over SMK Tarat in their opening match. They followed up with a commanding 29-0 win against Vokmat and finished strong with a 31-5 triumph over Sakura.
Their strong performances continued throughout the tournament, with consistent wins and solid teamwork.
“They showed great discipline throughout the tournament, including the group stages.
“That was the recipe for today’s victory,” Vincent shared after the match.
The tournament, which saw participation from eight schools—Vokmat, Sakura, MRSM, SMK Tarat, Sainsku, SMK Tebedu, St. Joseph, and SMK Muara Tuang—provided a platform for a diverse range of skill lelevels and highlighted the growing passion for rugby in Sarawak.
The event marked a significant milestone in youth rugby development in Sarawak.
This tournament offered a competitive environment where young players could showcase their skills, build team chemistry, and learn valuable life lessons in sportsmanship and discipline.
In the Final Bowl, SMK Muara Tuang triumphed, while Vokmat claimed victory in the Final Plate.
