KUCHING: A total of 146 papers will be presented across 36 panels at 14th International Malaysian Studies Conference (MSC14), featuring research from both senior and emerging scholars.

Malaysian Social Science Association (PSSM) President,, Prof. Dr Sity Daud, said the theme of ‘MSC14, Sustainable Development, Vulnerabilities and Resilience: Malaysia and ASEAN’, is timely as it highlights concerns about sustainable development and the resilient institutions and actors that have driven progress amid unprecedented challenges.

“As Malaysia assumes the ASEAN chairmanship, we take this opportunity to highlight the efforts to overcome challenges to development within the national and regional contexts.

“We will have 146 papers in 36 panels in which we will hear presentations by our scholars including emerging ones who will share their research findings.

“At the same time, we have several plenaries, namely two keynote addresses by National University of Singapore (NUS) Prof. Dr Syed Farid Alatas and from Institute of Borneo Studies and University College Sabah Foundation (UCSF) Prof. Dr Junaenah Sulehan tomorrow.”

Sity said this in her speech at the 14th International Malaysian Studies Conference (MSC14) officiated by UNIMAS Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & Innovation), Prof. Dr Siti Noor Linda Taib at The Waterfront Hotel on Tuesday.

In addition to the paper presentations and plenaries, MSC14 features two Roundtable Discussions (RTDs).

“The first RTD hosted by APPGM-SDG is on ‘Localising the SDGs in Malaysia: Lessons from Sarawak and National Reflections after Five Years’ with reflections from panellists among practitioners in APPGM and NGOs.”

This panel brings together four Members of Parliament, including the Deputy Minister of Economy, to reflect on five years of experience in localising the SDGs through parliamentary engagement.

“The second RTD to be held tomorrow (August 13) is on ‘Reflections on Malaysia’s Development and Democracy: The 13th Malaysia Plan and Beyond’.

“We have brought subject matter experts from 3KL and Borneo to explore RMK13 which is important to chart our development for the next 5 years, guiding our country’s transition to a developed nation by 2030,” Sity said.

The biennial conference, taking place from August 12 to 13 at the Waterfront Hotel, has attracted around 300 participants from countries including Indonesia, Japan, China, Azerbaijan, Nigeria, Singapore, and the United States.

It is organised by the Malaysian Social Science Association (PSSM) in collaboration with Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) and BESarawak.
