PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia and South Korea signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to strengthen cooperation in addressing climate change under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement on Nov 25, according to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) in a statement today.
It said Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad and South Korean Environment Minister Kim Wan-sup signed the MoU in Yongsan, Seoul, adding that the exchange of documents was conducted by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, witnessed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol.
The ministry said that the MoU enhances the commitment of both countries to achieve their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) targets under the Paris Agreement and long-term aspirations while promoting sustainable development and environmental integrity.
It added that the MoU also aligns with the outcomes of the Article 6 negotiations adopted at the United Nations Climate Change Conference, 29th Conference of the Parties (UNFCCC COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Article 6 allows countries to voluntarily cooperate to achieve emission reduction targets in their NDCs.
“Malaysia remains steadfast in its efforts to achieve climate targets under the Paris Agreement, with a focus on future low-carbon development that is resilient to climate change while fostering sustainable and green growth,” read the statement.
It said Malaysia-South Korea cooperation is expected to bring significant benefits, including opening up new opportunities to reduce greenhouse (GHG) emissions further, facilitating foreign investments, and allowing technology transfer.
It added this cooperation will enhance technical expertise and ensure a more robust and transparent approach to tackling climate change. – Bernama
