MUKAH: A new generation of rugby players took their first steps into the sport as 50 pupils from across Mukah Division gathered for the Second Mukah Division Rugby Clinic at SK Datu Pengiran Mohamad (SK DPM) Oya recently.

The clinic, organised by SK DPM Oya in collaboration with the Mukah District Education Office (PPD Mukah), forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen grassroots rugby development and identify future talent within the division.

Participants from five schools were introduced to the fundamentals of rugby, including passing, movement, teamwork and discipline, as organisers look to expand participation and build a stronger player pathway in Mukah.

According to a press statement, programmes such as the clinic are crucial in ensuring the long-term growth of the sport.

“While participants are currently learning the fundamentals of rugby, they could one day develop into players capable of representing Mukah and Sarawak at higher levels,” the statement said.

The Mukah Division Rugby Association (PRBM) also welcomed the initiative, describing it as an important step in strengthening grassroots development throughout the division.

Organisers hope similar programmes can be expanded in the coming years as rugby continues to gain momentum among schools in Mukah and surrounding areas.

Pupils from SK DPM Oya, SK Sungai Ud, SK St Bernard, SK Kampung Balan and SK Penakup Ulu took part in the programme.
