KUCHING: The Mulu Eco Challenge will be held in Mulu on Mar 29, aimed at promoting sustainable adventure tourism while highlighting the area’s unique rainforest and river ecosystems.

Organised by Grit Event Management, the event is expected to bring together athletes, visitors and the local community through a combination of sports, nature and community engagement in one of Sarawak’s most distinctive destinations.

The programme features a 12km trail run and a 5km river rafting eco challenge, offering participants an opportunity to experience Mulu’s natural environment in a responsible and eco-friendly manner.

The event also forms part of the Borneo Raft Safari series.

Community involvement forms a key component of the Mulu Eco Challenge, with activities such as Sukan Rakyat organised for local residents, as well as a welcome dinner for athletes to foster interaction and camaraderie between participants and the local community.

Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring) Datuk Gerawat Gala said the event would bring positive benefits to the area.

“This event is good for Mulu. It promotes healthy activities, supports eco-tourism, and brings the community and visitors together,” said Gerawat, who is also Mulu assemblyman.

In addition to promoting eco-tourism, the event is also expected to support local businesses, generate positive socio-economic impact for the community and raise environmental awareness.

Registration for the event is now open and will close on Feb 12.
