SELANGAU: The Munggu Lalang auxiliary firefighters have marked another step forward in strengthening community-based fire response with the opening of their own operations centre at Rumah James Serit, Munggu Lalang Chenanum, Tepus.
The centre was officially launched by Selangau Member of Parliament, Edwin Banta, and Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) director, Jamri Masran, on Sunday (April 6).
Formed in 2023, the Munggu Lalang auxiliary firefighters are the first team of its kind established in Selangau District.
The team was set up to empower local residents to take immediate firefighting and rescue action in the event of a fire, before the arrival of Selangau firefighters.
In addition to taking immediate action, the auxiliary team plays a role in educating the community about fire hazards and prevention.
Aside from that, they also support Bomba in the maintenance of fire hydrants and strengthening coordination with related agencies.
Present at the event were Selangau District officer Yalin Asan, government department representatives, penghulu of Tepus area, and 40 Bomba Community members from five nearby longhouses.
