SIBU: The Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) will continue to focus on good governance, more efficient services, smart and sustainable development, climate resilience, and people-centred growth in 2026.

SMC Chairman, Clarence Ting Ing Horth, said this is in line with the vision ‘Towards a Livable and Sustainable City by 2031’.
“The year 2025 did not start easily for Sibu. At the beginning of the year, our town was hit by floods that affected many families, homes, and daily lives.
“However, despite all these challenges, the true spirit of the people of Sibu is clearly evident.
“We are witnessing resilience, concern and unity where neighbours help neighbours, agencies work together, and the community stands strong as one,” he said at the SMC New Year Countdown 2026 at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang here on Wednesday night (Dec. 31).
According to Ting, despite facing various challenges, 2025 remains a year of progress and achievement for Sibu, through close collaboration between SMC and the community that continues to improve services, infrastructure and support for the people.
“Our journey is in line with the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030 Sarawak, particularly the ‘Social Inclusion’ pillar and supports the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals, including sustainable cities, strong institutions, and meaningful collaboration.
“SMC will continue to be committed to serving with integrity, innovation, and concern, as well as strengthening the city’s resilience in its efforts to move towards a liveable, sustainable and inclusive city,” he explained.
He also said that every success celebrated was the result of a joint effort, from local leaders, council members and officers, to community leaders, strategic partners, corporate partners, non-governmental organisations, and residents.
“Each of you has contributed to Sibu’s journey. Your dedication, ideas, and support are the lifeblood of this city,” added Ting.

Touching on the celebration theme ‘Heart United’, he explained that the theme reflects Sibu as a city rich in diversity, harmony, and shared responsibility.
“When our hearts are united, challenges will not divide us but rather bring us closer and make us stronger,” he stressed.
Also present at the event were Sibu Member of Parliament, Oscar Ling Chai Yew; SMC Acting Secretary, Sait Enggang; organising chairperson, Michelle Law Wan Ling; and others.
