MIRI: Mural art has the potential to be a powerful catalyst for community development, tourism, and the growth of the creative economy in Sarawak.
In stating this, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said mural art goes beyond mere decoration, as it reflects the identity and aspirations of the people.
“The form of art has the power to unite communities, empower individuals and transform public spaces into platforms for dialogue and mutual understanding,” he said.
Abang Johari said this in his speech read by Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, during the Mercure Miri Mural Fest & Art Conference held here today.
Carrying the theme ‘Beyond Art: Evolving in 50 Years’, the event brings together mural artists from the United Kingdom, China, Taiwan and Sarawak as part of a public art initiative that not only enhances the city’s aesthetic appeal but also gives voice to the community, including people with special needs.

Abang Johari also praised Mercure Miri City Centre and EvolveLand Bhd for organising such an international-scale event, and becoming the first hotel in Malaysia to receive the Green Key certification of which is an acknowledgement of its commitment to sustainability.
He therefore called upon all stakeholders, including local authorities, tourism bodies, and the private sector to continue supporting public art as a long-term investment in shaping the identity of cities and communities.
“Let us work together to preserve and promote public art so that it becomes a cherished legacy for future generations,” he said.
Meanwhile, the event also involved organisations, such as Empower Special Needs Connection and Malaysian Care, providing an opportunity for individuals with special needs to contribute to the creation of public murals – an inclusive and socially impactful initiative.
The mural festival ran from June 4 to 11, while the art conference will take place over two days from June 13 to 14 at Mercure Hotel Miri.
