KUCHING: Muslims across the country will celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri tomorrow, Saturday, March 21, 2026, marking the beginning of 1 Syawal 1447 Hijrah.

The announcement was made on Thursday night by the Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal, Tan Sri Syed Danial Syed Ahmad.

Earlier on Thursday, the ‘rukyah hilal’ (new moon sighting) ceremony to determine the start of Syawal was conducted at three key locations in Sarawak on Thursday evening.

At Teluk Bandung here, the observation was attended by Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Project Coordinator for Regional Development Agencies, Kuching North City Commission and Islamic Affairs), Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junadi.

Similar observations were also carried out at the Pusat Falak Miri and Tanjung Batu in Bintulu, involving appointed falak officers with the cooperation of state Islamic agencies.

The ‘rukyah hilal’ method, which combines physical moon sighting and astronomical calculations, plays a crucial role in ensuring the accuracy of determining the start of Syawal and the Aidilfitri celebration.

The ceremony also saw the presence of community leaders and representatives from relevant agencies, reflecting continued efforts to strengthen coordination in determining significant Islamic dates in Sarawak.
