KUCHING: Kuching South City Council’s (MBKS) has provided a platform for children to express their love, appreciation and emotions towards their grandparents through art.

Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng introduced a poster design competition titled ‘My Grandparents, My Heroes’ at a media conference here on Thursday.

Organised as part of MBKS community initiatives, the competition uses creativity as a bridge between generations, allowing children to communicate feelings of gratitude, respect and love while helping grandparents feel valued and recognised.

Wee said the initiative plays an important role in nurturing empathy and emotional intelligence among children while strengthening family relationships and promoting positive values such as respect, love and gratitude.

“The arts provide a meaningful way for children to express emotions that may be difficult to put into words, while reinforcing the importance of family and intergenerational connections,” he added.

The competition also supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education) by promoting holistic learning through creativity, values and emotional development beyond the classroom.

Participation in the competition is free and it is open to all kindergarten and primary school students.

Attractive prizes have been prepared, including RM250 for the champion, RM200 for first runner-up and RM150 for second runner-up, each accompanied by a certificate and trophy.

In addition, 25 consolation prizes of RM50 each will also be awarded, along with certificates and trophies.

The competition, together with the intergenerational fashion show titled “Two Ages, One Runway” reflects its commitment to building a caring community where children grow up in an environment of love and respect, while senior citizens continue to feel appreciated, relevant and empowered.

Parents, grandparents, schools and members of the public are encouraged to support and participate actively in these programmes, which aim to create meaningful shared experiences and foster compassion across generations.

“These initiatives reflect our spirit as a city that serves its people at every stage of life,” said Wee.
