KUCHING: Malaysia will introduce a newly structured national identity card beginning June 2026, featuring enhanced security measures and improved durability.
The new identity card incorporates 53 security features, including QR code verification allowing authorities to instantly authenticate card legitimacy through secure digital inspection systems.
“This new card significantly strengthens security and safety, with advanced encryption, anti-forgery laser technology, and durable polycarbonate materials,” said Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah.
She said this to the reporters after officiating the handover of Endowment Fund Sarawak and Bantuan Ibu Bersalin here on Monday (Jan 19).
She said the card also contains a more sophisticated embedded chip with higher encryption standards, making it more resilient against counterfeiting and physical damage over prolonged usage.
“However, existing MyKad holders may continue using their cards for daily purposes, with replacement required only when the government announces an official transition period.
“The transition to the new identity card will be conducted gradually, beginning with issuance and replacement processes starting June 2026, and the public are advised not to rush,” she said.
