KUALA LUMPUR: Local rapper, Wee Meng Chee, better known as Namewee, surrendered himself at the Dang Wangi District Police Headquarters (IPD) early this morning to assist in the investigation into the death of a Taiwanese female influencer at a hotel in Jalan Conlay here last month.
Dang Wangi District Police Chief, ACP Sazalee Adam, when contacted, confirmed the matter and said that a remand application for the suspect would be made this morning.
“For your information, Namewee will be remanded this morning,” he said briefly.
It is understood that the singer appeared at the Dang Wangi IPD early this morning after arriving from Johor Bahru to give a statement regarding the death of the Taiwanese influencer, Hsieh Yun Hsin, who was found dead in the hotel bathroom on October 22.
In a post on his Facebook page, Namewee stated that he came forward voluntarily and was prepared to fully cooperate with the police to clarify the situation to the public and to the victim’s family.
“I will not run away. Previously, in the seven times I was called by the authorities, I came forward voluntarily to give statements. I have never fled,” he said.
On Tuesday, Kuala Lumpur Police Chief, Datuk Fadil Marsus, was reported as saying that the case, which was initially classified as a sudden death (SDR), is now being re-investigated as a murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
He said that the musician was found to be the last person seen with the victim and is considered a key individual in assisting the investigation.
Hsieh’s body was reportedly found by the musician in the hotel bathtub at 1:40 p.m. on October 22, before being sent to Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL) for a post-mortem examination.
In the same investigation, the musician was also arrested for possession and use of drugs after police found nine blue pills, believed to be ecstasy, weighing 5.12 grammes in the hotel room.
He was later charged in the Kuala Lumpur Court on October 24.
Police are still awaiting the full post-mortem and toxicology reports to determine the exact cause of death of the 33-year-old woman. – BERNAMA
