KUCHING: The government has a dedicated budget to handle disaster situations more effectively.

In stating this, Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said funds from Yayasan Kebajikan Negara (YKN) are provided based on necessity.

“We are always prepared with sufficient allocations to handle any unforeseen disaster,” she said in a press conference after officiating at the 2025 Sinar Syawal YKN programme sponsored by Alliance Islamic Bank Bhd at Mydin Petra Jaya here today.

She said the government ensures such assistance reaches affected areas immediately, adding that individuals and organisations also do their part to help.

Commenting on the floods in Sibu, Nancy explained that the government already has a clear standard operating procedure (SOP) in place to ensure aid is delivered promptly.

“Authorities will also ensure that conditions at the temporary evacuation centres (PPS) do not dampen the festive spirit.

“If necessary, officers from unaffected states will be deployed to assist,” she added.

Nancy said as of March 23, Johor had 46 PPS across six districts, sheltering 2,514 families.

“In Sabah, five PPS remain open in five districts, accommodating 191 families with a total of 606 evacuees.

“Meanwhile, Sarawak has six PPS in two districts, housing 274 families, totalling 951 evacuees.

“There have been two new PPS opened in Sabah, and in Johor, 23 PPS have been closed.

“From this, we can see the efficiency of the officers in managing the situation,” she said.
