KUCHING: More women in Sarawak should be encouraged to enter politics and given proper leadership training to prepare them for greater participation in public life.

Women, Family and Community Development Minister, Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri, said the PERANTIS programme, which initially focused on women’s leadership, could help prepare more women to participate in politics.

She said this was particularly important in Sarawak, where more women should be encouraged to take an active role in political leadership.

“It’s time for us to really get more women to be involved in politics, but let them be trained and let them have the right minds and right attitude about politics,” she said at the PERANTIS PENDAYA 2.0 (2026) at the Dayak Chamber Tower here today.

Nancy said entering politics should not be viewed as a means of creating conflict, but as an opportunity for women to lead and help their communities.

“When you go into politics, it doesn’t mean that we want to fight. It’s all about leadership so that you can bring your people through,” she said.

She also encouraged women to support one another rather than feel threatened by the abilities of other women.

“Don’t let us, if a woman is smarter than us, we become afraid. That’s not the right way. So we should be there together,” she said.

Nancy said women should be willing to share their knowledge and experiences with others to help build a stronger pipeline of female leaders.
