KUCHING: The opening of the RM4.7-million Nanga Lasi Bridge in Julau is hailed as a symbol of progress and development, set to bring significant benefits to more than 1,500 residents in the surrounding areas.

Spanning across the Julau River, the bridge not only improves access to Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Nanga Lasi and Nanga Lasi Clinic, but also provides a safer, faster and more comfortable route for the community.

Meluan Assemblyman, Rolland Duat Jubin, said the construction of the bridge will be a catalyst for economic growth, particularly in the agriculture sector, which is the main source of income for the locals.

“The Nanga Lasi area has fertile land with strong potential for oil palm and pepper cultivation.

“With this bridge, marketing of produce will become easier, and transportation costs can be reduced,” he said in his welcoming speech at the bridge’s opening ceremony in Julau today.

It was officially launched by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Rolland also appealed for a special allocation of RM5 million from the Sarawak Premier to build a farm road in Nanga Lasi to resolve transportation issues during the rainy season.

In addition, he proposed the establishment of a modern agricultural collection centre and a pepper downstream processing plant led by local entrepreneurs, with support from soft loans or state government assistance to enhance the value of agricultural products.

He also urged the state government to consider upgrading the road from the end of the bridge to Jalan Setulang Balut, as well as constructing a new road from Rumah Kanip to Ulu Penepak, which would benefit about 2,500 residents and schools in the area.
