KAPIT: Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi has tipped Datuk Alvin Runggah Jimbun to succeed him as the next candidate for the Kapit parliamentary seat.
Speaking at a thanksgiving dinner with family and friends held here, Nanta said Alvin has been entrusted to continue playing a key role in driving Kapit’s development agenda.
He said Alvin is not a new face, having long served in various capacities including as a Special Duties Officer (PTTK II), and is well known both locally and at the state administrative level.
“If the time comes for me not to contest the P215 Kapit parliamentary seat, Datuk Alvin Runggah Jimbun will take over the responsibility.
“He will need the full support of the Kapit community to ensure the continuity of development can be carried forward more successfully.
“In building a better future, experienced leaders must continue to guide, while the younger generation should be given the opportunity to step forward and shoulder responsibilities,” he said.
Nanta emphasised that unity and cooperation must remain the foundation of progress, despite differences that may arise, echoing the Iban proverb “batu tungku nemu besengki”, which reflects the inevitability of disagreements.
“However, it is this spirit of unity and teamwork that must be preserved and strengthened to ensure the continuity of development in Kapit,” he added.
He noted that strong teamwork has already been demonstrated, citing the success of Kapit representatives contesting in the Supreme Council of the Pesaka wing of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), who secured among the highest number of votes.
“This reflects the strength and unity among members, built on the Pesaka culture of consensus, mutual respect and togetherness,” he said.
Nanta also paid tribute to past leaders, including Tapah Ata, whose legacy continues to guide the present leadership.
Looking ahead, he expressed confidence that Alvin would be able to carry forward the leadership legacy, unite the community and further elevate Kapit’s development.
At the same time, he stressed the importance of supporting Sarawak’s rights, particularly through PETROS, which he described as a key future revenue source for the state.
He added that current state policies have brought significant benefits to the people, including greater access to higher education, which should be fully utilised by the younger generation.
