KNOWN as a firm yet approachable leader, federal Works Minister and Kapit MP Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi consistently emphasises an approach that eases the public’s affairs and solves problems practically without unnecessary complications.

During the 19th State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting on Monday (Nov 24), he also shared a personal side, from hobbies and early aspirations to life philosophies that shaped him into an experienced leader.

This lesser-known side of him highlights his humorous and easygoing personality, explaining why he is approachable to the public and recognised as a friendly leader.

Sarawak Tribune had the opportunity to chat with him to get to know the person behind the ministerial portfolio and his life journey more closely.

ST: What are your hobbies, Datuk Seri?

I grew up in a rural area, in a longhouse in Kapit. With the large Rajang River nearby, the easiest activity during school days was fishing. Whether you catch anything or not is another matter, but catching fish was truly enjoyable and exciting. It gave me a space to feel calm.

ST: What is your favourite food?

My favourite food is chicken curry. But I don’t actually know how to cook it myself. Regardless, I enjoy it no matter who cooks it. When it comes to cooking, I can only boil eggs.

ST: How do you spend your leisure time?

I really enjoy reading. It has always been a passion of mine to gain knowledge and wisdom. However, my eyes tire quickly now, so I mostly follow news through YouTube and social media. Most of my time is spent reading e-newspapers as it is faster to keep up with current issues.

ST: If you were not a politician, what career might you have pursued?

If I were not a politician, perhaps I would have become a businessman. I enjoy the idea of working in my own way without being bound by a boss’ instructions. But during school, I was actually interested in becoming an educator.

ST: What is your main life principle?

My principle is not to complicate life. Don’t make things difficult. As a minister, I am firmly committed to the principle of facilitating the public’s affairs. Rules are necessary, but they should not cause inconvenience. I prefer solving problems rather than enlarging minor issues.

ST: If you were a superhero, what power would you like to have?

I would want a magical power that could solve all the people’s problems instantly, with just a snap of my fingers. If someone didn’t have a home, I would want them to immediately get one. If someone was sick, I would want them to recover instantly and be able to walk again. If such a power existed, I could help improve many lives. However, when it comes to superheroes, I don’t aspire to be Superman because such dramatic appearances are not my style.
