KUCHING: All contractors awarded road maintenance projects must carry out their responsibilities with integrity and professionalism to ensure the safety of road users.
Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said his ministry would not compromise with contractors who fail to carry out road maintenance works according to the prescribed standards.
“When the government allocates large funds to ensure our roads are safe and comfortable, I appeal to all contractors to carry out their work to the best of their ability.
“If the work is not done properly, road users will be affected. If accidents or loss of life occur, we will all bear the responsibility,” he said to the media at the balloting ceremony for federal road maintenance work offers in Sarawak for 2026 at the Hikmah Exchange Event Centre here today.
Nanta also urged close cooperation between the Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR), concession companies and the ministry in monitoring project implementation to ensure all works are completed according to the specified standards.
As for action against contractors who fail to complete projects within the stipulated timeframe, he said the ministry has clear governance and standard operating procedures for monitoring.
“We have monitoring mechanisms in place. If contractors perform poorly, or subcontract without proper control to the extent that it affects quality, action can be taken.
“If they truly fail or their performance is very poor, they can be blacklisted and not given opportunities in the future,” he said.
He added that firm action is necessary to ensure opportunities are also given to other contractors who are more qualified and have integrity.
“There are many contractors who have yet to be given opportunities.
“So we must ensure that only those who are truly committed continue to be entrusted,” he said.
