SIBU: National Day is not just about commemorating the historic moment of independence, but also an opportunity to instill the spirit of goodwill, appreciate harmony, and strengthen ties in the country.
It should therefore be celebrated by all Malaysians regardless of race, religion or background, as a symbol of national unity and strength, said Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.
“As the saying goes, ‘united we are strong’, but unity cannot just be a slogan on the lips.
“It must be applied in daily life – by respecting each other, supporting each other, and making differences our strength and diversity our advantage,” he said in his speech read by the Democratic Progressive Party (PDP) Dudong branch chairman, Datuk Teo Boon Siew, at the closing of the Dudong Area National Day Fishing Competition at Durin bazaar here on Monday (Sept 1).
The National Day celebration, said Tiong, is a reflection of Malaysia’s identity as a multi-racial people living in harmony.
“National Day does not belong to one race, one region, or one group only. It belongs to all of us – the people of Malaysia,” he said.
In this context Tiong, who is Dudong assemblyman also pointed out that the participation of people of all races and ages in the fishing competition is a true manifestation of the national spirit.
“More than 100 participants gathered today, not just to compete, but to interact, build friendships, and enjoy an atmosphere full of warmth. This is the true meaning of the National Day celebration that embraces all walks of life,” he said.
